Chapter Four

Kiril had woken early as he still did after two years working in the construction industry and then several months working in the Castle Kitchen at Werewolf Castle. On the one hand it was rather annoying that now, when he could sleep in as long as he wanted to, his body still woke him up so early in the mornings, but on the other hand, today it meant he could lie in bed staring at Flynn sleeping. Even asleep she was quiet and neat, lying on her side, her hands tucked under her chin, her legs drawn up to her waist, and her ankles crossed.

He grinned, staring at Magnus on the other side of her, flat on his back, arms and legs sprawled across far more than his fair share of the bed.

Yesterday he and Magnus had piled a shopping trolley high with a variety of foods and drinks, hoping to cater to all the individual tastes of the group that would be arriving from Werewolf Castle tomorrow. They didn’t even know exactly who was coming, apart from the Alpha, Yerik Vulf, and his mate, Odette, but they were able to guess at some possible members of the team. Jairus, for example, who had traveled throughout Europe as the Alpha’s messenger until he and Grigori had met and mated Damask. And Leonie and her mates. Leonie Baum was the daughter of Leon Baum, owner of Baum Construction, and therefore she would likely know the Alpha of Germany well as he ran a construction business, too. Leonie, a human, was now mated to Brody and Roman.

Kiril thought it very likely there would also be several other men. Big, tough wolves to act as a protection detail for the Alpha and the women in the group. One thing the pack had an abundance of was big men. For several generations far more male wolves had been born than females, which is why the Alpha had mandated that two male wolves share a human female. The system had brought a surprising benefit. Not only had it meant the males had found a mate, but it seemed that when wolves and humans mixed, their offspring reverted to half male and half female in most cases. The newest generation of werewolf shape-shifters had an equal number of boys and girls, although not every child of the union got the werewolf gene, of course.

Feeling hungry, Kiril slipped out of bed, showered, and walked into the kitchen. He and Magnus had purchased a lot of breakfast-style foods, thinking that even if the team dined out at night, likely they’d all make their own breakfasts. So there were bagels and sourdough bread, eggs, bacon, cheeses, peanut butter, jelly, mushrooms, tomatoes, and baby spinach, as well as muesli and oatmeal and raisins. Enough for everyone to find something they liked, he hoped.

He filled the coffeepot and set it to heat, then dropped half a dozen eggs, some chopped bacon, chopped tomatoes, a handful of shredded cheese, and a few mushrooms in a pan to heat.
